Goodbye silver fillings, Hello white fillings

If you were born before the 80s and have had some dental fillings done, chances are these were done using metal amalgam fillings and not white fillings.

Your amalgam filling may look like a silver part of your tooth, and when it gets older it may turn discoloured to a darker blackish hue. For a lot of people, it can make them very self-conscious. It may be visible when you laugh or yawn or perhaps your silver filling is deteriorating and causing some discomfort.

Are you curious to know why amalgam was once the preferred filling material?

Dental amalgam fillings date back to the 1800s when a French dentist mixed a small amount of mercury with some melted silver coins to create a dental filling material.

It evolved from there and over time other metals (including lead – unbelievable right?) were incorporated to create a long-lasting, malleable material that was easy to place into teeth cavities. Dentists and inventors were determined to create a very long-lasting material that was easy to use and would pretty much last a lifetime. Amalgam fillings ticked a lot of those boxes.

Sounds awesome right? Except maybe not…

As we now know, mercury and lead are poisonous for the human body, and despite lots of evidence to support the safe use of modern amalgams, they are definitely no longer a preferred material for creating dental fillings. Plus, silver fillings are not very good looking things!

What happens to your tooth with a silver dental filling as time progresses?

In our dental practice, we often see teeth that have been filled with silver metal fillings for 20-30 years… or even longer! The recurring pattern we see is that a lot of these teeth suffer from cracks and symptoms due to the old filling design and materials used.

You use your teeth every day for your entire life, and you chew up to 100 times a day when you eat. Like most mechanical systems, your teeth and mouth need a stress breaker. A metal filling that was designed to last a lifetime, wedged into your tooth (not chemically bonded) can be detrimental because all the stress is then placed on the surrounding tooth structure.
Eventually, the tooth structure, together with the filling, will break.

Want to know what better dental filling alternative is available?

Here at Gisborne Family Dental, we rarely use metal amalgam materials for your dental fillings. Modern day fillings are made with tooth-coloured composite resin, which is medical grade plastic that is completely safe for your mouth.

Today’s white composite fillings adhere to your tooth structure to help provide strength. They also have a degree of flex that mimics your real tooth structure, and come in a variety of tooth coloured shades to restore the beauty of your natural tooth.

On top of all that, as you repeatedly use your teeth in daily life causing wear and tear, these white fillings do not place stress on your precious natural tooth structure, hence prolonging the lifespan of your teeth. This material has been tried and tested for the past few decades and continues to improve rapidly every day.

Crowns and Bridges Specialist in Gisborne

Are you wondering why your teeth are chipping and breaking more often in recent years? For teeth like these, reinforcing them with a more durable and better designed material in the form of dental crowns and bridges will ensure they perform well for many years to come.

A dental crown or bridge allows your teeth to go the distance

Do you avoid biting on some of your teeth, because they feel weaker and you have to be so cautious about how you eat? If you have teeth that have had larger fillings to repair them, they are weaker and may not last as long. This is because filling materials either wear away, or the remaining tooth structure can start cracking off.

The analogy we use is like repairing or renovating a house – when the structure is weak, you could patch or repair the defect, but ultimately it will need proper reinforcing so that it will remain solid for a long time. This is done through dental crowns and/or bridges.

Similarly for teeth, large fillings are like patchwork repair jobs, and may only be a temporary solution. To ensure your teeth remain strong and able to chew delicious food for the long term, we use well-designed ceramic dental crowns to reinforce your remaining tooth structure.

Not every royal gets a crown

Every person, every mouth and every tooth is unique. Every individual uses their teeth in different ways. We all exert differently on our body, and vent our stress differently. Your teeth may have been filled heavily 20 years ago, while the other person has clenched and caused a crack in a tooth that was not previously filled.

At Gisborne Family Dental, we tailor our advice to your unique situation and needs. We use thorough examination and interviewing to predict any risks to your teeth, and provide all the information so that you can make an informed decision.

Dental crowns are proven to be able to preserve natural teeth, chewing ability, and smile aesthetics for the long term. Compared to simple fillings, crowns are much more durable, and are able to prevent continuous deterioration of your natural teeth.

Therefore, dental crowns are a great ‘tool’ to have in our arsenal to help you enjoy your smile throughout all the stages of life. Imagine being pain-free, able to chew a piece of steak properly again, and not worry about breaking your fragile tooth over a long weekend!

Are you bothered by your discoloured filled teeth?

Your tooth fillings may discolour over time because of the degradation of filling material. These can show up as yellowish, brownish, or grey coloured areas. Of course, as the filling gets larger, so does the area of discolouration. We understand that this can really make you very self conscious about your smile.

By reinforcing a tooth with a ceramic dental crown, we are not only strengthening the tooth, but also improving the aesthetics of the tooth. Dental ceramics of today are durable, very lifelike, and come in a variety of shades to match your natural teeth.

Filling the gap with a tooth bridge

A dental bridge is what the name suggests. In select situations, we may use a ceramic bridge to replace a missing tooth by applying ceramic crowns to the teeth on either side of the missing tooth. This treatment can really be a “two birds with one stone” approach to get double the benefits, especially when these neighbouring teeth are also deteriorating from old fillings and cracks.

Affordable Tooth Implants

A dental implant or tooth implant is a restorative dental procedure that focuses on replacing missing teeth. They are designed to function like your natural teeth and have the same appearance. At Gisborne Family Dental, we can tailor your dental implant treatment to suit your situation and to ensure the best and most affordable outcome.

If you have missing teeth and require dental implants, contact Gisborne Family Dental. We use advanced technology to provide a safe, precise and pain-free procedure.

What is a tooth implant?

A dental implant or tooth implant is a restorative dental procedure that focuses on replacing missing teeth with a replica tooth that is designed to function like your natural tooth and have the same appearance.

Tooth implants act like artificial teeth… right down to the roots! Resembling the shape of screws, implants are positioned beneath your gums in the jawbone, where they bond with your natural bone.

Sounds painful, right? Well, don’t be put off!

We use advanced technology to provide a safe, precise and pain-free dental implant procedure.

Once your procedure is complete your implant is used as a post or base to support an artificial replacement tooth, such as a crown, a bridge, or dentures.

How long is the dental implant procedure?

The implant procedure happens over a number of visits, usually over a few months.

We understand this lengthy time frame can trigger some anxiety around your missing tooth and what your recovery after each step will be like.

That’s why we take the time to explain each step to you, helping you relax and focus on how your implant will restore your incredible smile.

How much are dental implants?

Trust us, a dental implant is worth it!

You will have a more natural feel, as implants won’t slip or shift in your mouth, making it so much easier to eat and speak. The last thing you want is a fake tooth falling out of your mouth at the dinner table!

A tooth implant is permanent, meaning you won’t have to worry about taking your artificial teeth out to clean them or take them out to sleep, no one will ever even know!

The dental implant procedure costs between $2,500 and $3,000 allowing for extra costs for the artificial tooth, the original tooth removal (if needed), and sleep dentistry if you would like to be asleep for the procedure.

At Gisborne Family Dental, we can tailor your dental implant treatment to suit your unique situation and to ensure the best and most affordable outcome for you.

You can even get a full mouth of dental implants

Unfortunately there are some people who have misshapen or discoloured teeth, and it may really embarrass you.

Sometimes it can be to the point where you never speak or smile with your teeth showing. In our opinion, this is no way to live.

Forget about veneers, often it can make more sense for you to get a full mouth of dental implants.

Instead of individually inserting an implant for each tooth, we can use only four implants and place top and bottom bridges or dentures by attaching them to only two implants each.

Talk about efficiency! Dental implants are the best way to get a full smile makeover.

The end result we aim to create together is an improved natural-looking beautiful smile, that you’ll be proud to show off as you live and laugh, and that has minimal maintenance over the years with the right care.

We can help you achieve the smile you want.
